Silent Hill 2 Remake’s New Trailer Shows Off A Lot Of Combat

Konami gave us new gameplay footage for the upcoming remake of its beloved survival horror sequel

Silent Hill 2, a remake of Konami’s legendary 2001 survival horror game currentlyin the works at Layers of Fear developer Bloober, got a new trailer during the January 31 Sony State of Play.

Bloober released its first Silent Hill 2 teaser in October 2022, unveiling the remake’s renditions of foggy old town Silent Hill and grimy executioner and series patron monster Pyramid Head, as well as a particularly haggard James Sunderland. Everyone freaked out. It was the first time Konami had revisited the Silent Hill franchise in years.

And now, we have a new gameplay trailer showing off the remake in action. However, this trailer is mostly focused on the game’s modernized third-person combat.

In a (translated) November 2022 interview with Polish culture site Rytmy, Bloober creative director Mateusz Lenart said that in “the first months of working on the Silent Hill 2 remake, we played the original very closely” and felt that its “world building and plot are its strongest points,” though its combat system could use a reset with improved enemy AI.

The remake will also swap the original’s fixed camera angles for an over-the-shoulder third-person perspective, similar to Resident Evil 4. The goal was “to immerse players even deeper into the game, make them feel like they are a part of this unreal world,” Lenart said in a PlayStation Blog post. Otherwise, the adored horror game’s (purposefully) abhorrent story will be untouched.

But though that October 2022 trailer was recently named the inaugural Horror Game Awards’ Best Horror Trailer of the Year, Bloober has been fairly quiet about SH2 since it came out until today’s new combat trailer.

Sadly, the trailer didn’t include what most fans really want: A release date. Instead, Bloober Team confirmed it’s in development on PS5 and that’s it. Expect to be waiting a while to play this one.
